Causes of Bad Breath

The most common causes of bad breath are dryness of the mouth and gum disease (periodontal disease). Gum disease is caused by plaque bacteria that produces sulphur molecules, which give off a foul odour. This can be treated at our Calgary clinic, and the odour will disappear.

Other causes of bad breath include:

Eating garlic, onions or other spices

Poor hygiene habits

Lack of professional cleaning

Drinking coffee and/or alcohol

Smoking or chewing tobacco

Tooth decay

A sinus infection

Lung disease

Chronic acid reflux

Kidney disorders

Diabetes

Preventing Bad Breath

Proper hydration, good oral hygiene and avoiding the foods and drinks listed above can diminish bad breath, but sometimes that is not enough. Brushing and/or scraping your tongue can also help decrease the odour-producing bacteria in your mouth, and you may obtain an effective tongue scraper at our Calgary clinic. If your bad breath persists, or you are still concerned, please visit our Calgary clinic so we may rule out other possible conditions.
